On Sunday, the traditional ruler of Mgbede community in Egbema Kingdom, Rivers State, Nzeobi Amida, bestowed a chieftaincy title upon Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. The title, “Ugo Egbema,” meaning “The Pride of Egbema Kingdom,” was granted to Nwabali in acknowledgment of his outstanding performance at the recently concluded 2023 African Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire.
According to the Nigerian sports website BSN, Amuda, who also serves as the chairman of ONELGA Council of Chiefs, expressed that the title was a tribute to the honor Nwabali brought to Egbema Kingdom and ONELGA through his contributions to the Super Eagles.
Earlier, The PUNCH had reported that on Friday, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara presented Nwabali, a native of Rivers, with a gift of N20 million and bestowed upon him the Distinguished Service Star of Rivers State.
Additionally, President Bola Tinubu honored each player and official of the Nigerian Super Eagles on Tuesday, recognizing their achievement in securing the silver medal at the just-concluded AFCON with the Member of the Order of the Niger national award.
