Olufunmilayo Oladitan, 32, was found guilty of drug trafficking and given a 15-year prison sentence by the Federal High Court in Lagos.
Oladitan was sentenced to prison by Justice Daniel Osiagor after she pleaded guilty to a five-count charge of trafficking in illegal drugs that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had brought against her.
Augustine Nwagu, the prosecutor, claims that the defendant was in possession of psychoactive drugs when she was arrested, including 7 grams of cocaine, 11 grams of methamphetamine, 52 grams of cannabis sativa, 47 grams of tramadol 225mg, and 106 grams of Rohypnol.
Nwagu said the convict was arrested with the prohibited drugs on November 3, 2022, at the NAHCO Export Shed at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, during the examination and clearance of cargo to Dubai, a city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
He claimed that the act was illegal and in violation of sections 11(b) and 20(1)(a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, and was subject to punishment under section 20(2)(a) of the same Act.
Nwagu urged the court to find her guilty and sentence her in accordance with the legal provisions under which she was charged based on her plea.
Dennis Warri, the defendant’s defense attorney, pleaded with the court to exercise mercy while arguing that his client was a first-time offender who had no prior convictions. Warri also told Justice Osiagor that the prisoner had been ill since December.
In his ruling, he gave the convict a three-year maximum sentence on each count, with an N350,000 fine as an alternative.
However, the judge determined that the three years in jail would be served concurrently with the three years of probation, and the fine option would be served consecutively, so she would have to pay N1,750,000.
However, the court ordered that the drugs seized be destroyed if there was no appeal against the verdict after the allotted time.
