Nigerians have been warned about the dangers of the cough medicine “Naturcold” by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
It is reported that the cough medicine, which is allegedly produced by Fraken Group, is thought to be to blame for the deaths of six young children at a medical center in the Fundong health district in the country of Cameroon’s North West.
The children’s kidney function decreased after using the cough syrup, according to Cameroon’s North-West Regional Delegate for Public Health.
According to a recent press release from NAFDAC, the product is not authorized for marketing in Cameroon and was obtained from unauthorized sources.
“Although the product is not listed in the NAFDAC database, importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers are advised to exercise caution and vigilance throughout the supply chain to avoid the importation, distribution, sale, and use of substandard (contaminated) syrups,” the agency stated.
“All medical products must be obtained from authorised/licensed suppliers. The products’ authenticity and physical condition should be carefully checked.
