Members of the organised labour who are currently protesting in Abuja have forcefully pulled down the main gate of National Assembly to gain entry into the complex.
To keep the demonstrators from entering the building, armed police officers stationed at the entrance locked the gate.
But after a fight broke out between the demonstrators and the security guards, the demonstrators tore down the complex’s main gate. The swarming crowd overpowered the security officers.
The demonstrators have vowed to bring down the building as well and are currently making their way to the second gate.
Members of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and other irate Nigerians took to the streets of Abuja, the capital of the country, on Wednesday to demonstrate against the hardship brought on by President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s decision to eliminate the fuel subsidy.
Members of organised labour held placards and banners as they marched away from the well-known Unity Fountain to begin the protest.
The President of NLC Joe Ajaero and TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo addressed the protesters at the Federal Ministry of Justice, calling on the Nigerian government to address the suffering being faced by the masses arising from the subsidy removal.
The protesters expressed their displeasure with the fuel price increases and the Tinubu administration’s inability to change its “unfriendly policies targeted against the poor.”
They carried placards with messages like #BringBackOurRefineries, #LetThePoorBreathe, and #ALUTACONTINUA, among others.
From Unity Fountain, the protesters headed to the National Assembly gate.
