In a significant development following the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal’s rulings on the March 18 governorship elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in ten states, solidifying its electoral success in various regions of Nigeria.
The APC secured victories in the following states: Gombe, Cross River, Benue, Lagos, Kano, Ogun, Ebonyi, Kaduna, Kebbi, and Sokoto.
Gombe State: The tribunal confirmed Muhammadu Yahaya’s re-election as governor of the state, dismissing the petitions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Jibrin Barde, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its candidate, Nafiu Bala.
Cross River State: In Calabar, the tribunal upheld the election victory of Senator Bassey Otu as governor and Peter Odey as deputy governor, dismissing the petition brought by Prof. Sandy Onor against their election.
Benue State: The tribunal, on September 23, dismissed the petition by the PDP candidate Titus Uba against the election of Hyacinth Alia of the APC. Furthermore, it held that the allegation of forgery against the governor was a pre-election dispute and should be brought before the tribunal.
Lagos State: The governorship election tribunal upheld the victory of Babajide Sanwo-Olu, while simultaneously dismissing the petitions filed by Olajide Adediran (alias Jandor) and Rhodes-Vivour.
Kano State: The tribunal declared Nasiru Gawuna, the APC candidate, as the winner of the March 18 poll, a ruling that is currently being challenged by the incumbent governor of the state, Abba Yusuf, who has filed a notice of appeal.
Ogun State: The governorship election petition tribunal affirmed the victory of Governor Dapo Abiodun as the winner of the March 18 governorship contest in the state, thereby dismissing the petitions brought by PDP’s Ladi Adebutu.
Ebonyi State: On September 27, the Ebonyi State governorship election tribunal dismissed the petition filed by Bernard Odoh of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and affirmed Francis Nwifuru as governor of the state.
Kaduna State: The governorship election petition tribunal upheld the victory of Uba Sani as the governor of the state. The panel ruled against the PDP and its candidate, Isah Ashiru, for the premature filing of the application for pre-hearing.
Sokoto State: The tribunal affirmed the election of Ahmed Aliyu of the APC as the governor of the state.
Kebbi State: Similarly, the Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Birnin Kebbi reaffirmed the election of Nasir Idris as the duly elected governor of Kebbi State. The tribunal dismissed the application filed by the PDP challenging the governorship election won by Idris of the APC and his deputy, Abubakar Umar.
On the other hand, the PDP emerged victorious in several states, including Plateau, Zamfara, Bauchi, Enugu, Nasarawa, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Taraba, Oyo, Adamawa, and Rivers.
As of now, the state tribunals have delivered judgments in 22 states, while six states are awaiting rulings from their respective tribunals. These states include Borno, Jigawa, Katsina, Kwara, Niger, and Yobe.
