In the early hours of Tuesday, December 12, no fewer than ten individuals lost their lives, and seven others sustained injuries in a tragic incident on the Lagos/Ibadan expressway. The calamity unfolded around 5:00 am when a passenger bus, bearing the registration FKY898YF and identified as a Toyota Hiace, collided with an unmarked tipper, an Iveco Truck Tipper.
Emergency response teams from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) were observed working tirelessly to rescue victims, clear the road, and redirect traffic.
Florence Okpe, the Ogun State FRSC Public Education Officer for the Sector Commander, Anthony Uga, confirmed the incident on his behalf. Okpe revealed that the injured individuals received medical attention at Famobis Hospital, while the deceased were taken to Idera Morgue in Sagamu.
Okpe attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speed, resulting in a loss of control that led to the bus colliding with the tipper, which was negotiating a turn. She specified that among the 18 male adults involved, seven sustained injuries, and ten tragically lost their lives.
Quoting Sector Commander Anthony Uga, Okpe expressed his distress over the avoidable crash, emphasizing the importance of drivers taking a 15-minute break for every four hours of driving to mitigate fatigue, a significant contributor to road traffic accidents.
