The Nigerian chess master striving to surpass the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon successfully engaged in the game for 60 consecutive hours.
Tunde Onakoya faced off against U.S. chess champion Shawn Martinez at a table set up in New York’s Times Square and emerged victorious in every game.
The current Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon stands at 56 hours and 9 minutes, prompting the record-keeping organization to review evidence from the 60-hour attempt to ascertain if it qualifies for the title.
The record-breaking endeavor aimed to raise $1 million for Chess in Slums Africa, a charity co-founded by Onakoya to advance education in low-income areas across the continent. Onakoya shared on social media that he celebrated the conclusion of his attempt with a serving of Jollof rice, his first meal in nearly four days.
“I had some food poisoning during the marathon so I couldn’t eat anything at all. Just water,” he wrote.
