Ayra Starr, the Afrobeats sensation, has addressed the incident where she made an ‘honest mistake’ upon meeting the legendary singer King Sunny Ade at an event. Recently, Ayra faced criticism for what was perceived as disrespect towards KSA at the Heineken Afrozons Pre-Grammy Party.
In a widely circulated video, Ayra was seen seemingly ignoring Burna Boy’s mother while warmly greeting a woman beside her. Ayra then proceeded to greet KSA while standing and shaking hands with him. The perceived ‘disrespect’ sparked backlash, prompting Ayra Starr to issue a heartfelt apology on her Twitter page, referring to KSA as her uncle and providing an explanation.
Ayra emphasized her commitment to showing respect to her elders, highlighting her identity as a proper Yoruba girl. In an interview, she described the incident as an unintentional mistake, citing the dim lighting at the venue as a factor that contributed to her not recognizing KSA. Ayra pointed out that the viral clip was edited to cast her in a negative light and clarified that she made amends by properly greeting him after being informed of his presence.
“An hour after I saw that, like when the video was posted, immediately I just acted. Like it wasn’t even up to an hour, I just put up my apology.
“It was an honest mistake, literally, it was dark. I went back to greet everybody and the video started after I greeted Mama Burna Boy, and that short clip wasn’t what it was at all.
“When they told me it was King Sunny Ade, I went back to greet him properly but the camera didn’t capture that,” she said.
