For the third extraordinary session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC), which is being hosted by President Nana Akuffo-Ado, President Muhammadu Buhari will leave Abuja today for Accra, Ghana.
At the high-level discussion on tactics to bolster peace and security in the struggle against maritime-related crimes in the region, President Buhari is scheduled to take part and make remarks.
The Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the GGC, and their partners have all worked together to address and prevent piracy. Buhari served as the Assembly’s immediate past chair during this time.
The Suppression of Piracy and Other Maritime Offenses Act, 2019 (POMO Act) was passed by the National Assembly in June 2019. It aims to prevent and punish piracy, armed robbery, and other illegal acts against ships.
Along with other government officials, the President will accompany the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, the National Intelligence Agency Director General (NIA), Amb. Ahmed Abubakar, and the National Security Advisor, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno (ret.).
