The ousted Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Alhaji Abdulrasheed Bawa, has shown reluctance to cooperate with the Department of State Services (DSS) while being held in custody.

Bawa, who is currently detained at a DSS facility, has strongly asserted that the secret police are detaining him unlawfully without presenting any formal charges.

Both Bawa and Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, have been in custody following their removal from their respective positions by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. These actions were prompted by allegations of corruption and abuse of power levelled against them.

Sources indicate that Bawa has refrained from cooperating with the DSS investigators since the commencement of his detention, expressing his protest against being held without any official charges being brought against him.

Additionally, reports suggest that he has been accused of shielding former Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State and allegedly assisting him in suppressing his political adversaries.

Insiders have disclosed that “the detained EFCC chairman has persistently refused to provide written statements, firmly asserting that the DSS has no authority to detain him without pressing charges.”

Another source mentioned, “Since his detention, he has vehemently declined to cooperate with DSS investigators,” as reported by Sahara Reporters.

Meanwhile, emerging reports indicate that during his questioning by the DSS, Godwin Emefiele implicated Bawa as an accomplice in the recent Naira redesign scandal that caused significant uproar in the country. This revelation surfaced following Emefiele’s arrest and subsequent transfer from Lagos to Abuja for interrogation regarding alleged corruption and abuse of power.
