The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken action against individuals issuing invoices in dollars and defacing the naira, particularly in Lagos and Port Harcourt. This initiative aims to prevent the devaluation of the Nigerian currency, the naira. On Wednesday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale revealed this development in Abuja.
Oyewale also mentioned that the commission has summoned owners of private universities and other higher learning institutions that charge fees in dollars for questioning. Additionally, he stated that the EFCC has established a special task force in all its zonal commands to enforce existing laws against currency mutilation and the dollarization of the economy.
Oyewale explained that the task force was recently inaugurated by the commission’s chairman, Ola Olukoyede, to safeguard the economy from abuses, leakages, and distortions that could lead to instability and disruption. He reiterated the commission’s dedication to enforcing all laws designed to stimulate economic growth.
