Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, finds himself still in Kuje Prison, Abuja, seven days after being granted bail. The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory had set bail conditions for Emefiele, who was granted bail by Justice Hamza Muazu on November 22 with a bond of N300 million.
The court ruling specified that Emefiele must produce two sureties with landed properties in the Maitama District of the Federal Capital Territory. However, as of now, the former CBN chief has been unable to fulfill these conditions, leading to his continued incarceration in Kuje Prison.
During the commencement of the trial on Tuesday, Emefiele was transported to court in a van accompanied by heavily armed security personnel from the Kuje Prison. The court premises were under tight security, with armed agents guarding the area.
Rotimi Oyedepo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), reveald that Emefiele has not met the bail conditions, and therefore, he remains in prison on remand.
Emefiele’s lawyer, Mathew Burkaa, SAN, acknowledged that his client is still in prison and stated that efforts are underway to fulfill the bail conditions, particularly the requirement of securing two sureties with properties in the specified district of Abuja. Following Tuesday’s proceedings, Emefiele was returned to Kuje Prison.
