A Keke driver has been stoned to death by an angry mob in Kpansia area of Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa state.
The keke driver was said to have stabbed a passenger of his over a N50 dispute the transport fare.
The deceased passenger, named Thankgod Douglas, who was a father of three and a native of the community was charged N150 by the tricycle driver, which brought about an argument as he supposed the price was N100.
The unyielding argument escalated into a fight between both persons and while being separated by people in the scene, the keke driver, according to eye-witness accounts, brought out a dagger and stabbed the young man on his lap sending him to the ground and eventually, he lost his life.
Angered by the unfortunate incident, a mob seized the keke driver and had him lynched.
Additionally, it was learned that the youth turned their rage on nearby Hausa tricycle drivers, setting fire to a great number of their vehicles while destroying cars that were on the road.
The youths in their group have been roaming the streets of Okaka and Yenizue-Epie, destroying anything they consider to be “aboki” property.
The Bayelsa state police command, confirming the incident, noted that the mob action was uncultured and would not be accommodated.
The spokesperson, Asinim Butswat, speaking on the matter said:
“The Bayelsa State Police Command has deployed an anti-riot squad to restore normalcy at Kpansia and environs, over the unfortunate murder of a community youth by a tricycle rider.
“The youth was allegedly stabbed to death by the tricycle rider over a minor disagreement.”
He reiterated that the command condemns the mob action while urging the populace to maintain calm.
“The Command condemns the action of the tricycle rider, who was also lynched to death by irate youths and appeal to members of the community to be calm.”
