The Police Commissioner of Lagos State Command, Mr. Idowu Owohunwa, officially inaugurated a specialized investigative team on Monday. The primary mission of this 19-member unit, drawn from the Homicide Section of the State, is to unravel the circumstances surrounding the untimely demise of the renowned R&B singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

The inauguration ceremony took place at the command’s main hall in Ikeja, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN). The formation of this investigative team was first announced by the command in a statement released on Saturday. 

The decision was prompted by mounting public concerns and an initial review by the police regarding the circumstances of Mohbad’s death.

“The team, which comprises seasoned homicide detectives, has been tasked to aggregate all allegations, suspicions and insinuations from various sources on the death of the singer.

“The team is to undertake a professional, diligent and timely investigation with a view to establishing facts, clearing all doubts and ensuring that justice is manifestly served through a meticulous process that will deploy all requisite protocols (which may include exhumation),” the command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, had said.

The team, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Mr. Saheed Kassim, comprises seasoned homicide detectives and experts from various units, including legal and forensic. Their mandate is extensive and includes tasks such as exhuming the singer’s body, conducting autopsies, toxicology, and histology examinations, visiting the scene of the incident, and assessing hospital and medical records along with statements from suspects and witnesses.

Mohbad, a 27-year-old music sensation, tragically passed away on Tuesday, leaving behind a cloud of controversy surrounding the cause of his death. The Lagos State Government has pledged full support to the Special Investigation Team, ensuring a thorough and diligent investigative process.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reiterated this commitment during consultations with the state’s police chief on Saturday. He stressed the importance of expeditiously investigating the case and delivering swift justice.

In a plea to the public, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, urged anyone with relevant information that could aid the investigation to come forward. He provided a dedicated hotline for contact: 08036885727. Additionally, Hundeyin assured the public that updates on the progress of the investigation, within legal boundaries, would be shared transparently.

The launch of this special investigative team marks a significant step toward shedding light on the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of the beloved R&B singer Mohbad.
