The House of Representatives, on October 10, has directed its Health Institutions Committee to investigate the untimely death of Michael Umoh, a medical professional at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). This probe aims to ensure better working conditions for healthcare personnel in Nigeria.

Additionally, the Labour and Employment Committee has been instructed to assist in this investigation, with a report expected within six weeks for further legislative actions.

In honor of the deceased doctor, the House observed a moment of silence during the session.

These resolutions were made following the adoption of a motion titled “Need to Investigate the Untimely Death of Medical Personnel on Duty,” presented by Hon. Adedayo Samuel Adesola.

The House emphasized the crucial role of medical personnel in the healthcare system. It was brought to their attention that on September 17, 2023, Dr. Michael Umoh, a resident medical officer at LUTH, tragically passed away after working for 72 hours straight in the Neurosurgery unit.

The House also acknowledged another recent incident where a young female medical doctor lost her life due to elevator failure in a General Hospital. These unfortunate incidents could have been prevented with better working conditions.

The House expressed concern over multiple reports of medical personnel losing their lives due to harsh working conditions and negligence, resulting in the loss of some of the country’s brightest minds.

Furthermore, they recognized that such incidents have contributed to the demands for improved conditions of service by groups like the National Association of Resident Doctors, Nigeria Medical Association, and other related organizations, as demonstrated by the recent strike organized by NARD to advocate for their needs.
