MultiChoice Nigeria Limited has hiked the subscription fees for its DStv and GOtv packages, despite an interim order from the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) in Abuja.
Just recently, the tribunal issued a clear injunction, preventing MultiChoice Nigeria from implementing its planned subscription price increase, slated for May 1.
Additionally, the tribunal granted an application for substituted service of the interim order, as reports surfaced that officials at MultiChoice’s Abuja office refused to accept the court documents.
In a ruling, presiding officer Saratu Shafii emphasized the tribunal’s commitment to ensuring MultiChoice’s compliance with its directives. Festus Onifade, the applicant in the case, informed reporters that a senior manager at the Abuja office instructed that all documents be forwarded to their Lagos headquarters.
Despite these legal proceedings, the new subscription rates were enforced on May 1, much to the disappointment of millions of subscribers who expected the company to stick to the previous rates.
Consequently, consumers saw this increase as a betrayal by MultiChoice, accusing the cable company of disregarding both the legal system and customer interests.
