The Lagos State Police Command has stated that the individual responsible for fatally shooting a resident at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) mega filling station in the Obalende area is a member of its force.
According to SaharaReporters, the victim, whose identity remains unknown, was killed on Wednesday evening while attempting to purchase fuel amidst the ongoing scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol.
Allegedly, a dispute arose between the deceased and another individual at the filling station over who should be next in line to buy fuel. Tragically, the altercation escalated, resulting in the fatal shooting of the victim. The perpetrator fled the scene immediately following the incident.
Conflicting reports emerged regarding the identity of the shooter, with some witnesses alleging that the individual was a police officer, while others claimed they were an operative of the Department of State Services (DSS). The DSS refuted these claims, denying any involvement in the incident.
However, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the event, disclosing that the shooter has been identified as a police officer serving at Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 17, Lion Building, Lagos. Hundeyin, however, refrained from disclosing the suspect’s name.
The police spokesperson said, “The person behind the shooting has been identified as a police officer serving at Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 17, Lion Building, Lagos.
“Investigation is still ongoing and further findings will be made available. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command is working with the family of the deceased to ensure that there is no miscarriage of justice.”
