The Lagos State Police have arrested Afrobeats singer Seun Kuti for allegedly assaulting a police officer over the weekend.

On Monday, the Public Relations Officer for the Lagos State Command, Benjamin Hundenyin, confirmed this in a statement via his official Twitter handle. 

The PPRO said, “Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, in the early hours of today turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, in company of his lawyer and family representative. He has been placed under arrest.”

The musician was accompanied by a lawyer representing Falana and Falana Chambers, the law firm of popular human rights activist, Femi Falana, SAN.

Keep in mind that after the Inspector General of Police ordered Seun’s arrest for assaulting a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, policemen had stormed the Afrobeat musician’s Lagos apartment and the African shrine in the Ikeja neighborhood of Lagos to arrest him.

Reports also confirmed that police operatives were at Seun’s place on Saturday night and Sunday morning, but did not meet him.

The Police Service Commission, or PSC, denounced Seun’s assault on a police officer in Lagos who was wearing a uniform and performing official business yesterday.

PSC praised Baba Usman Alkali, the Inspector General of Police, for taking decisive action to have Seun detained and charged.

Also recall that Seun Kuti had earlier given his word to cooperate with the police and encouraged an investigation on the matter. He also prayed to the IGP that the guilty party be indicted.
