A Jos magistrate court sentenced student Emmanuel Epke, 24, to one month in prison on Wednesday for stealing two phones.

As Epke admitted guilt to the charge brought against him, the judge, Shawomi Bokkos, handed down a punishment.

According to Bokkos, the goal of the sentence was to deter potential repeat offenders.

Nonetheless, the magistrate offered the convicted party a choice of an N10,000 fine.

Previously, Insp. Ibrahim Gokwat, the prosecution’s attorney, informed the court that the crime was reported on February 28 at the Anglo-Jos Police Station by the complainant, one Ezekiel Agu.

Gokwat claimed that the offender broke into the complainant’s home and stole two phones worth $600.

“During police investigation, the convict was found with the two phones,” the prosecution counsel said.

The offence, he said, was punishable under the Plateau state penal code law.
