The Grammy Award-winning Afrofusion artist Burna Boy has stated that he does not believe in musical genres because he dislikes feeling boxed in.
In an interview with Complex that was published on Wednesday, he made this claim in an effort to define Afrofusion.
The 32-year-old said, “Why I created Afrofusion is because I didn’t want to be boxed into any Afrobeats or boxed into Hip-Hop or boxed into anything because I don’t believe in genres. So for someone who doesn’t believe in genres, where are you going to keep him?”
He has received six Grammy nominations, winning one in 2021 for Best Global Music Album with his project Twice As Tall.
Burna Boy recently stated that Afrobeats lack substance, which elicited a mixed response from fans and other musicians.
The ‘Last Last’ singer stated this in a recent interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in New York, where he described Afrobeats as “nothing” with no substance. He said: “Afrobeats as people call it is mostly about nothing, literally nothing. There’s no substance to it. Nobody is talking about anything. It’s just a great time, it’s an amazing time.”
